Upgrade Order

Many clashers are aware that you should ‘max’ your troops and base before upgrading from one TH to the next — BUT — clan war clans will probably want you to do an order between TH upgrades. Specifically there is a prevailing momentum in the game-meta right now (04/15/2015) that you should first max your offense then your defense when upgrading in a TH. This is tied to match making theory in clan wars (people suspect offensive upgrades don’t count so your clan isn’t penalized w/ harder opponents when you do it but you get to be more powerful in the war). Anyway, that’s the theory.

So, what does this mean at JTJ?

Town Hall 11

Our monkies are busy working on the TH11 upgrade order.

 

Town Hall 10

TH10: Intro – Welcome to TH10 (9.1)

Do not place new defenses or walls yet.

  1. Clan Castle
  2. Lab – Get your troop/spell upgrades going ASAP
  3. Spell Factory – Do not war without spells
  4. Army Camps x 4 – 20 extra units is the biggest upgrade you can get
  5. Barracks/DB – You can start into the next stage while working on these

Lab Priority: Valkyries, Hogs.

TH10: The Basics – Road to 9.5 (9.2)

Do not place new defenses or walls yet.

  1. AQ/BK – Prioritize upgrading heroes where possible
  2. Giant Bomb – Drop the new one and get it to level 3
  3. Seeking Air Mines – Drop the new one and get all your SAMs maxed
  4. Skeleton Trap – Drop the new one and leave it at level 1 for now

Lab Priority: Golems, Wizards.

TH10: Building Up – Upgrading What We Have (9.3)

Upgrade existing defenses, but do not place new defenses or walls yet.

  1. ADs – Air Defenses to max
  2. Teslas -Hidden Teslas to max
  3. ATs – Existing Archer Towers to max
  4. ASs – Air Sweepers to max
  5. Giant Bombs – All Giant Bombs to max
  6. Cannons – Existing Cannons to max

Lab Priority: Jump Spell, Wall Breakers, Bowlers.

TH10: Building Out – Adding New Defenses (9.4)

We now start building some of our new defenses.

  1. AT – Drop it and get it maxed
  2. Cannon – Drop it and get it maxed
  3. Skeleton Trap – Drop it and get it maxed
  4. Air Bombs – Drop it and get all your Air Bombs maxed

TH10: The Plateau – Lab, Heroes, Xbows, and Walls (9.5)

At this stage, you should work on completing all remaining Lab upgrades. The clan will benefit from your strong offense and low weight. Beyond this point Walls, Xbows, and Inferno Towers will increase your weight significantly. Clashers wanting to stay as a 9.5 should stop after this stage.

  1. BK/AQ – Max your heroes to 40/40, if they aren’t already
  2. Xbows – Drop your 3rd Xbow and get it to level 3
  3. Walls – Drop your 25 new walls and get them to level 10
  4. Traps – Drop and upgrade any remaining traps

TH10: Completing TH10

When you’re ready to go beyond 9.5, this order will give the best power-to-weight ratio. Your base’s weight will increase sharply during this stage.

  1. WT – All Wizard Towers to max
  2. Inferno Towers – Drop and max (very heavy weight!)
  3. Walls – Have fun grinding these to max
  4. Mortars – The least useful of the high-weight upgrades

Town Hall 9

TH9: Intro – Welcome to TH9 (8.1)

Do not place new defenses or walls yet.

  1. Clan Castle
  2. Lab – Get your troop/spell upgrades going ASAP
  3. AQ – Level 1 for now, but upgrade when possible
  4. Spell Factory – Do not war without spells
  5. Army Camps x 4 – 20 extra units is the biggest upgrade you can get
  6. Dark Spell Factory – Do not war without spells
  7. Barracks – You can start into the next stage while working on these

A note on Dark Barracks: Unless you are planning on becoming a LaLoon/LaDrag specialist, you can delay upgrading your Dark Barracks. Witches carry with them a very large war weight. TH8.5s can use many attacks effectively without Witches or Hounds.

Lab Priority: Hogs, Heal Spell, Golems.

TH9: The Basics – Road to 8.5 (8.2)

Do not place new defenses or walls yet.

  1. AQ – Prioritize upgrading heroes where possible. Get AQ to 5 at minimum.
  2. Giant Bomb – Drop the new one and get it to level 3
  3. Seeking Air Mines – Drop the new ones and get all your SAMs maxed
  4. AD – Drop the new one and get it to level 6
  5. AS – Drop the new one and get it to level 4

Lab Priority: Valkyries, Jump Spell, Wizards.

TH9: Building Up – Upgrading What We Have (8.3)

Upgrade existing defenses, but do not place new defenses or walls yet.

  1. BK/AQ – Continue upgrading heroes. Aim for 10/10 at least.
  2. ADs – Air Defenses to max
  3. Teslas – Existing Hidden Teslas to max
  4. ATs – Existing Archer Towers to max
  5. ASs – Air Sweepers to max
  6. Cannons – All Cannons to max

Lab Priority: Wall Breakers, Healers, Rage Spell.

TH9: Building Out – Adding New Defenses (8.4)

We now start building some of our new defenses.

  1. BK/AQ – Continue upgrading heroes. Aim for 15/15 at least.
  2. AT – Drop it and get it maxed
  3. Tesla – Drop it and get it maxed
  4. Xbows – Drop it and leave at level 1
  5. Skeleton Trap – Max them all
  6. Air Bombs – Drop it and get all your Air Bombs maxed

Xbows are a high-weight building. The first level offers decent DPS-to-weight value, but hold off upgrading until later.

TH9: The Plateau – Lab, Heroes, and Walls (8.5)

At this stage, you should work on completing all remaining Lab upgrades. The clan will benefit from your strong offense and low weight. Beyond this point Walls and Xbows will increase your weight significantly. Clashers wanting to stay as an 8.5 should stop after this stage.

  1. BK/AQ – Max your heroes to 30/30, if they aren’t already
  2. Walls – Drop your 25 new walls and get them to level 8
  3. Traps – Drop and upgrade any remaining traps
  4. Dark Barracks – If you opted to delay getting Witches/Hounds, consider upgrading it now, or in the next stage

TH9: Completing TH9

When you’re ready to go beyond 8.5, this order will give the best power-to-weight ratio. Your base’s weight will increase sharply during this stage.

  1. Xbows – Max them
  2. WT – Finally drop that 4th  Wizard Tower and get them all to max
  3. Walls – Have fun grinding these to max
  4. Mortars – The least useful of the high-weight upgrades

 

TH8

The following upgrade order is out of date and JTJ no longer uses TH8s in war. However we keep this here for any affiliate clans looking at the upgrade order we used to use.

Offensive Buildings — Upgrade Order

  1. Army CampsGood news, there are no army camps to upgrade at TH8.
  2. Lab6 (4 days) – Note: Before you start the upgrade of the lab, kick off one of your troop upgrades (assuming you are not fully maxed on troops coming in). The research will continue while the lab upgrades.
  3. Dark Elixir Storage – Get this up to 30,000 size so you can gather the DE necessary for your first DE upgrade (hogs). 
  4. Dark Spell Factory – Moved up on 12/19/15 due to emergence of double poison CC take out.
  5. Spell Factory – Good news, there is no Spell Factory Upgrade at TH8.
  6. CC Get this to size 25.
  7. Dark Barracks (6 days + 7 days) – Moved down on 12/19 as hog attacks are not using Golem as much anymore (double poison change).   But if you ‘love’ GoWiPe this might be worth going earlier.
  8. Barracks – Get one of these to max level so you can spit out a PEKKA (don’t need all 4 right away).

Lab Research Order

  1. Hogs — Level 3 & 4 – (10 days + 12 days) – You should have Hog2 arriving at TH8, therefore 22 days into TH8 you should have Hog4 and be prepared to start practicing KH1, Ho and KH, Ho.  We go hogs first as many of the TH8.1 (entry level) and TH8.5 (mid level) targets that are weak to air can be covered by TH7 Salts hitting up.
  2. Heal Spell — Level 5 – (5 Days).  Supports hogs.
  3. Poison — Level 1 and 2.  Poison moved down, below heal, due to needing only 1 max poison to take out a drag (one in cc slot).  So poison can come later.
  4. Dragon — Level 3 – (10 days).  We waited on this as Hogs are capable of taking a lot of the TH8.1 bases that are AD665 or less.
  5. Baloons — Level 5 – (5 days) – For 99 and 813 dragoon attacks
  6. Q and L (Earthquake and Lightning) — EarthQauke to Level 1 (just build the dark spell factory to level 2 and you will have that) and Lightning to Level 5.
  7. Rage — Level 5 – ( 7 Days)
  8. Wizard — Level 5 – (5 days)
  9. Golem — Level 2
  10. PEKKA — Level 2 and 3.  Moved down 12/19 based on cc spell add (making Dragoon vs AD666 viable)
  11. Archer
  12. Barbarians
  13. Wall breakers
  14. As you wish from here

Defensive Buildings — Upgrade Order

Until you have AD6x3, you will be three starred by all decent dragon attackers, so AD6 is your focus.

  1. AD6x3 – One will be a new AD, the other 2 are just a single upgrade from Level 5. First build the level 1 ad, then do the two level 5 to 6 upgrades of the other two Ads. Yes, you will get hit while they upgrade, but suffer through and get them to L6.
  2. CC — Get that clan castle up.  Definitely helps in defense (5 slots & offense)
  3. Air Sweeper — Upgrade that to level four.  You should have it at level 3 coming in.
  4. Archer Towers are your next best defense against dragons, prioritize these
  5. Teslas – very effective against dragons, you should ALWAYS have a tesla upgrading, at least one because these take forever. Do not wait until the end of TH8 to start or you will be sorry because it’s a grind.
  6. Wizard Towers
  7. Mortars
  8. Canons

** walls are done as you have excess Exilir/Gold and/or as you approach max for the TH.  Max your walls for TH8 before upgrading. **

  1. Archers may not be that Important in wars, but lvl 4 archers cannot withstand upgraded mortars at TH8, so lvl 5 becomes a must for loot. Shouldn’t that be on priority?

  2. Dont place your AQ into mid of your base.. It would be possible to reach her from nearly each side. So you can choose the way which allows you to trigger one or two dgbs.

    Th8.5? I know you mean a mid level TH8, but others might get confused, because a TH7 hitting up on a TH9 with a queen? Uh, no – lol.

  4. I think that there should be a note somewhere that says that you need your Dark Elixir Storage upgraded to level 3 before you can hold the 30K DE you need for your most important and first research upon hitting TH8.

  5. I don’t really agree with you here. At th8, upgrading Barch is a priority. All hogs is too expensive to be used every war, and should only used in close wars. I chose to upgrade go wipe first. And I prefer to make sure my loot is safe before protecting for war. Drags are a good idea, but do it after barch.

    1. Interesting a ‘price sensitive’ war strategy. Fair perspective. However, in JTJ we assume cost isn’t an issue. We go full-tilt every attack. Helps us win. Helps us practice the attacks we’ll need cold when the hard wars come. We would rather take every rep we can with the attacks we believe are the best.

      1. Now, to let you know, I am the same person as the other anonymous, I am in a successful lvl7 clan. Everyone does gowipe and all drag. No one does hogs. It simply isn’t necessary for a three star. And we need it to be worth the win.

      2. I am an almost maxed TH7 (minions and walls left) and I always get my clan 6 stars in war by using hogs and drags. The hogs are especially important in the attack. I can three star mid-TH8s. Yes, it is expensive(in terms of DE) but I can practice attacks that will prepare me for TH8.

    1. We win about 90% of our clan wars. We fight two base designs: anti drag and anti go wipe. Anti drag is spread out with ad in centre. Anti go wipe is compact base with lots of compartments. Every time we pick wisely, we win. And how are you earning your de if most of your war attacks are all hog? War win bonus for de is about 2-3 k, and all hog costs about 3-3.5k. We aren’t a clan into the cheap way out. But all hog is simply too expensive and not worth it.

      1. How to farm DE,while you use gohogs in war? you just click on attack and go with a normal army to get that loot going, you can farm 30k in couple days, without issues (as th8) just go to crystal/master and youll be fine

  6. We just don’t view Clan Wars as ‘loot wars’. Loot is easy, Victory is hard is our motto. We would rather practice maximum power armies. So that is the way our stuff is written.

    1. I would argue that there are a few clans out there that do just that – war for war, not for loot. JTJ, BRCM, and the onehive family of clans for starters.

      At th7, I saw war as currency exchange. I would trade loads of elixir for dragons, which equaled 6 stars and dark elixir. At th8, for me, war is all about the best attack to 3 star the base, whether that’s 30+ hogs, GoHo, 813 R, or 3go eq. Just trying to farm skulls, I haven’t been below 60k DE so no issues “paying” for war lol.

  8. So I looked at your stats. We are also lvl 7, and yet you invest a LOT more cash into wars. It just doesn’t seem worth it. And you make it sound like loot is really easy. De is soooo easy. Everything is sooo easy to loot. It doesn’t make sense. It just doesn’t add up. You either invest almost all your resources into war or you invest all resources into looting. You make it sound like you are a special clan hardcore into war because apparently “loot is easy: victory is hard” No one wars for a currency exchange.

  9. I am not trying to belittle or insult your clan. But I simply looked up clash of clans town hall 8 upgrade priority and it showed up. Loot, then war. Makes sense. Unless war is you only loot. Long upgrades generally come last. Not all, but most

  10. Well after reading all the comments. I want to just say that all the war clans who have rules like JTJ has, benfit from this new upgrade as every attack will require a good troop comp. Barcher and other cheap armies are worthless now. And those who know how to war will now benifit from reg raids.

    1. Yeah, I do like the update. In fact, it made me discover my fave route new army: healer gag. Healer, giant, archer, goblins. Gets from 40-80% on a town hall 8 and almost all the loot for only 70 k elixer

    1. If people keep whining about farming I may — LOL. To be honest I’ve been surprised at how many are struggling w/ loot now that certain methods (immortal queen) were nerfed.

      1. Yeah you totally nailed it about dips after the update; things seem fine now and all I’ve needed to do is modify my farming strategy. 10 giants, 6 wbs, 1 barb rack and 3 archer rack is working really well.

  12. I’m am a co-leader of a level 9 war clan and I can tell you we do not war for loot ever. We use full attacks regardless of the loot outcome. Our current war record is 158-3-3. We war to win.

  13. Farming is even easier than before. Drop to Gold3/Silver1 and pull the countless collectors. Farm to upgrade to war, trophy hunt later. I’m about an 8.3 and pull roughly 700k/700k/2k per war. 700k/2 days is 350k a day. If you can’t farm more than 350k a day you shouldn’t be commenting in a war clan’s upgrade order post! 🙂 Peace!

  14. What would the upgrade order be for a prospective 8.5? What would I do with my elixir and gold? I’ve heard people say they do 12 walls right away, I’ve also heard that they do all teslas/ads right away with gold. For elixir I plan to go lab right away then collect full collectors and CC elixir to do an army camp.

  15. I like your TH9 upgrade order. I am 2 weeks in to it now. After the recent changes to the game I started to have trouble getting the Elixir, but have plenty of Gold and Dark Elixir. So I am using 1 builder(I only have 4) for X-bows(AD next) and 2 for Camps(last done tomorrow) and 1 on Dark Barracks. When camps done then Queen(now 3) and the rest.
    I think it is important to stagger the builders so that you do not have 2 builders done on same day, as it is hard to get the loot to keep them going. So small 1 day or less upgrades and walls to dump gold to keep builders busy and to manage the staggering.
    Hogs 5 and Witch ready in 7 days, back to war then. Thanks for the info, very helpful.

  16. TH9 reads a little circular to me right now, and would much appreciate a little clarification:
    -Army camps before any defensive upgrades, but new towers and xbows before offensive maxing
    -3 star TH9s 19 days in, but need max golem in CC, which is not upgraded until significantly later

    Also, is the prioritization of witch upgrades accurate now with the advent of 2Ptk?

    1. Defensive upgrades are different pool of stuff (Gold) than offensive upgrades (exilir, SF) so doing them in parallel is possible. Key is to not table defense.

      Right now I would say the meta is shifting to Queen Walk / Dive play so CC isn’t key … but maxing Q and Healer and Hogs is. I may shift to that (upgrade order) if the trend continues. For now I wouldn’t sweat CC too much can live w/ CC 25 for short time.

IF the goal is always to be upgrading for war, do you think moving XBOW down in the upgrade priority is a good move, since defensive buildings work while under construction so you could start XBows after the war is created and xbows would work during the war, and also you wouldn’t be weighted as high.

  18. What if you did not tinker with the weighting and you dropped the xbows prior to the war search, you would still be a build ahead come war time. By the way if there anything you can do about spies. We just had a teams number one guy join our clan for about a minute before we figured out he was matched up against us. Pathetic.

      2. We continue to avoid .5. We feel, versus good clans they do more harm than good (in clan war win/loss). So its the 1 out of 10 clan that has a shot of rolling you in random matches that .5 becomes a concern.

  20. Noticed BK is not on upgrade list for TH8. is this just because of hogs being the norm and most attacks not relying on BK to be max? Have on of my alts going to TH8 with BK 5 and was just curious

  22. I agree full .5 or mini maxing only hurts in the long run but I think being mindful of war weight is a great advantage. I’ve held off on mortar upgrades till very last at th8 and have consistently been way ahead of my mirror or even a few up the entire time. Balanced weight consciousness will pay off.

        ….
        Rest all are th7 troops…. Shud i move to th9 ?
